What's Covered in the 4-Hour Class
You’ll review and re-test the core skills your BLS card already certifies you in:
- Adult and pediatric CPR, including two-rescuer scenarios and bag-mask use
- AED operation
- Foreign-body airway obstruction (choking response)
- Special considerations for pregnant patients
The class reflects the most recent AHA guidelines. If your last BLS class was years ago, expect a few things to feel different — compression depth, ventilation pacing, and how the team response is sequenced have all shifted since the older curriculum.
Full breakdown of every BLS format we offer — initial certification, blended HeartCode, and renewal — lives on our BLS Course page.
Who This Class Is Built For
This is the initial certification course. It’s the right fit if you’re:
- A nursing student who needs BLS before clinicals start
- A CNA earning your first BLS card for hire-on at a hospital, SNF, or home care agency
- A healthcare provider whose card fully expired — once a BLS card lapses, even by a day, most employers and the AHA require the full initial course again, not a renewal
- Anyone whose employer specifically requires AHA-issued certification rather than a generic CPR card
If your card is still active and you’re refreshing before expiration, the BLS Renewal class at $65 is the right option instead. Sending you to the cheaper class costs us a sale, but the wrong class costs you a do-over.
About the Card You'll Receive
You’ll walk out with an American Heart Association course completion card valid for two years.
The issuing body matters more than most people realize. Michigan hospitals, nursing programs, and most employers specifically require an AHA card — a Red Cross or generic CPR certificate often doesn’t count, even when the skills tested are the same. If your employer or program said “BLS for Healthcare Providers,” they almost always mean AHA-issued. If you’re unsure, send them the card name and confirm before paying.
What to Expect on Class Day
The 4 hours move quickly. The class is built for adult learners who need to perform under pressure, so most of the time is spent on a manikin or working with a partner rather than sitting still.
A few things worth knowing in advance:
- Wear something you can kneel and move in. Most students don’t think about this until they’re on the floor doing chest compressions in jeans.
- The physical part feels harder than expected at first. Proper compressions are tiring — that’s normal and a sign you’re doing them right. Most students settle in by the second hour.
- Bring water. You’ll need it.
You don’t need any prior experience. We start from the basics and build up.
